Residents & Families Share Their Experience
A selection of recent accounts from people who have lived at On Yin or arranged a placement for a family member.
"My mother moved into the Full Comfort arrangement last spring after living alone in Sham Shui Po for five years. She was hesitant at first β understandably so. Within a fortnight she was joining afternoon tea every day and had started tending a small trough of herbs in the garden. The staff knew her name and her preferences from the first week. I visit every Saturday and she is genuinely more settled than I have seen her in years."

"We chose the dining arrangement first to see how my father found it before committing to more. He is not the most sociable person, but he started looking forward to the afternoon tea sessions and now goes most days. The food is genuinely good β proper Cantonese cooking, not something out of a caterer's tin. We will probably move him to the full package later in the year."

"I was worried about the transition β my aunt had lived in her flat in Kowloon City for over forty years, and moving anywhere felt like a loss. On Yin handled it slowly. Her welcome host spent time with her over the first few weeks and helped her arrange her room with familiar things. She has been there three months now and tells me she likes the garden most."

"The pricing was what first caught my attention β it is stated plainly, which is not as common as it should be in this sector. But what has kept my father here is the kitchen. He grew up in Kowloon and the food here tastes like the cooking he remembers. That matters to an older person more than I had understood before."
Tang Ho-Wai
Son of resident, Tsim Sha Tsui

"My mother is not someone who takes easily to new places. The first month was hard for her, and I appreciate that the team at On Yin did not push her to participate in things she was not ready for. She joined the dining arrangement only, and over time found her own rhythm. The staff are discreet and that has mattered a great deal to her."
Ng Siu-Fan

"We live in Melbourne and arranging care for my grandmother in Kowloon from overseas was a real concern. The team at On Yin responded to every question we asked, quickly and without frustration. She has been in the Full Comfort arrangement for eight months now. The monthly reports and our visits on trips home show her settled, comfortable, and genuinely content."

Resident Journeys
Three accounts that reflect what the settling-in experience at On Yin tends to look like over time.
Mrs. Lau, 78
Full Comfort Residence Β· 14 months
Starting Point
Mrs. Lau had been living alone in a single-bedroom flat in To Kwa Wan after her husband passed away. Her family, based in different parts of Hong Kong, found it difficult to visit regularly and worried about her eating properly and keeping active.
What Changed
She joined the Full Comfort arrangement. Within the first two months, staff noted she was attending all three meals and had formed a friendship with another resident through the garden sessions. Her daughter reports a noticeable improvement in her overall manner on visits.
Now
She has been at On Yin for over a year. She tends a small planting corner in the courtyard and joins the afternoon tea table most days. Her family says the decision to move her here was the right one.
Mr. Ho, 82
Shared Dining β Full Comfort Β· 9 months
Starting Point
Mr. Ho's son wanted to try a gradual approach β starting with the dining arrangement to see how his father settled before committing to more. Mr. Ho had reservations about sharing a home with people he did not know.
What Changed
The daily lunch table introduced him to three other residents with connections to Kowloon City. Shared history and Cantonese cooking made conversations easy. After five months he asked to move into a room.
Now
He is now in the Full Comfort arrangement and his son says the step-by-step approach was the right way to do it. Mr. Ho attends every dim sum session and has not once asked to leave.
Mrs. Cheung, 75
Garden Mornings + Dining Β· 6 months
Starting Point
Mrs. Cheung still lives in her own flat nearby but was becoming isolated after retiring. Her daughter felt she needed daily contact and activity without a full change of living situation.
What Changed
She joined both the dining and garden arrangements, coming to On Yin each morning and staying through dinner. The regularity of the routine has given her days a structure that she said she had been missing.
Now
She returns to her own flat each evening and describes On Yin as a second home. The flexibility of the arrangements made this possible without requiring a full move.
